HERstory
The Gamma Kappa Sigma Alumane Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was chartered on January 28, 1961 in Grambling, LA. Soror Doris M. Robinson (Omega Rho), a school teacher was prolific in helping establish the alumnae chapter in Grambling. Soror Sadie A. Ludley (Omega Rho), a school teacher for over 25 years was big part of the chapter throughout the years. Soror Ludley made sure that the chapter stayed financial and active until her passing in 2016.
Gamma Kappa Sigma would be active for years after that serving the Grambling and Lincoln Parish area. GKS was known for their community involvement with the City of Grambling, Grambling Police Department, Grambling Fire Station, Grambling State University, amongst the other D9 organizations, NAACP-Grambling Branch, etc. Some initiatives included Operation Big Book Bag, Voter Registration, Little Miss and Mister Blue and Gold Pageant, Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness, Community Policing Summit, Youth Symposium, Project Cradle Care, Mwanamugimu (Essay Contest), Buckle Up America, Domestic Violence, Financial Literacy, etc. GKS would go inactive for a few years until recently. Due to the hard work of four sorors who saw the need in the Grambling area, the process to reactivate the Gamma Kappa Sigma Chapter was initiated. On August 26, 2024, the Gamma Kappa Sigma Alumnae Chapter was reactivated by 18 motivated and dedicated sorors.
